The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards were held at COEX in Seoul on May 7 at 5 pm (KST). The star-studded event was televised live on JTBC and Prizm for viewers worldwide, with hosts Shin Dong-yup, Bae Suzy and Park Bo-gum. Through the use of rigorous review, the award event aims to highlight exceptional achievements in theatre, cinema and television. The Best Screenplay Award (Film) was presented at the ceremony by actress Chun Woo-hee. While presenting the nominees, the actress paid tribute to late actor Lee Sun-kyun.

Two of Lee Sun-kyun’s films, Killing Romance and Sleep, were among the nominees that were displayed on the screen. Chun Woo-hee stopped briefly to pay homage to the actor when the montage ended.

“I caught glimpses of Sunbae-nim (Lee Sun-kyun) among the nominations. I think his presence in those projects will forever stay in our hearts,” she was quoted by Koreaboo as saying.

Jason-yu, the director and writer of Sleep, received the coveted honour and expressed his gratitude through a video message. In his victory speech, Jason-yu acknowledged Lee Sun-kyun’s commitment to the project. According to the news site, each of these artists addressing Lee Sun-kyun onstage is more significant than it appears.

Due to the unfavourable response from the public, it was difficult for the artistic community to even publicly grieve Lee Sun-kyun after his unexpected death in 2023.

After Lee Sun-kyun was accused of being a VIP at an adult entertainment establishment and became involved in allegations of drug usage, the public’s perception of the previously well-known celebrity underwent a significant shift. During the 2023 SBS Drama Awards, actor Lee Je-hoon received strong criticism for referencing Lee Sun-kyun in his victory speech.

Nevertheless, after more industry people banded together to demand justice for Lee Sun-kyun, whom they believed to be the victim of a badly handled police probe, things appear to have calmed down significantly.

Meanwhile, Moving and 12.12: The Day emerged as the main winners of the 2024 Baeksang Awards. Hwang Jung-min received the Grand Prize, Best Actor, and Best Film awards for 12.12: The Day. Disney Plus’ Moving took home the Grand Prize and My Dearest was named Best Drama.

One of the night’s major victors was Exhuma as well. The movie won Best Actress (Kim Go-eun), Best New Actor and Best Director (Jang Jae-hyun) after receiving eight nominations. In the meanwhile, IVE An-yujin and Kim Soo-hyun took home the PRIZM Popularity Awards.
